Health Focus Area

Our community partners are providing health education and implementing solutions for food insecurity and high medical costs. The Bronx Community Foundation works to remove systemic injustices that have caused our health and quality of life to lag behind the rest of the city.

Health

The Bronx is the unhealthiest county in New York State. The South Bronx, often described as “Asthma Alley,” is surrounded by four highways, several waste facilities, and a steady stream of heavy truck traffic, servicing warehouses, printing presses, and other emissions-intensive industries.

COVID-19 has proven especially dangerous for those with existing respiratory conditions. We have been distributing masks, hand sanitizer, and gloves to Bronx residents in order to keep our vulnerable populations safe.

Food Security

The Bronx is one of the greenest boroughs in New York City and one of the greenest metropolitan areas in America. The Bronx is also the northernmost borough and closest to the farms in Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Ulster, and Rockland Counties. The Bronx also has one of the largest food distribution centers in the world, The Hunts Point Food Distribution Center.

Even with the abundance of available resources, The Bronx remains NYC’s hungriest borough with nearly one in four Bronx residents experiencing food insecurity, according to federal data analyzed by Hunger Free America. Our place-based approach is intended to eliminate barriers to food access by bringing fresh, healthy food to where it’s needed most.

We partnered with the RAP4BRONX, World Central Kitchen, New York State Assembly Member Michael Blake, Here to Here, to provide more than 2.8 million prepared meals to the community, tens of thousands of grocery bags to families, and more than 40,000 pounds of fresh produce to homes and community partners.
